How to Make Your Bridal Makeup Last Under Your Mask

Even though restrictions are loosening and celebrations are now being held for up to 250 people, safety precautions are still very much a way of life which means no ditching the mask on your wedding day. So, how do you keep smudges at bay and your lipstick in place under this years must-have accessory? During our Online Hitcheed Meetup, we invited Cherry Au from Autelier Makeup to share about tips to make your bridal makeup last under your mask. 1) Go Matte

Ideally we’d all go foundation free under our mask but on your wedding day you want a reliable, flawless base that will last. Find a long wear foundation that is lightweight and non-comedogenic, the lightweight base allows you to build layers and adapt to your desired coverage. If you want more coverage try applying with a brush first then set with a dry sponge, paying close attention to areas where your mask will touch like the bridge of your nose and your jawline.

2) Prime & Set

Avoid moisturising primers that emphasise the dewy consistency of your foundation. Instead opt for a strong-hold, mattifying primer with a sticky consistency. The stronger the primer the longer your foundation will last. The must have product to save you from smudges is a good quality setting spray or translucent powder. Setting your foundation helps remove the moisture that causes your makeup to wipe off, essentially acting as a barrier and helping to mattify your skin - great for this humid weather.

3) Smudge-proof Lips

Although your mask is a compulsory accessory, you’ll be removing it to eat, drink and during your wedding portraits. Given that your lips are covered, lipstick and gloss are a recipe for smudges and stains - a lip balm is the most mask friendly but if you’re determined for a strong lip, stick to your favourite colour and top off with a translucent setting powder. Keep your lipstick on you for top ups throughout the day. Exfoliating lips before application helps the product stay on longer.

4) Loosen Up The Mask

The common PPE masks have a metal band that can mould to the bridge of your nose, which is great as a safety precaution but not so friendly on make-up. Opt for a looser mask in a breathable cotton material to help reduce moisture from your breath and ridges created by the metal band.

5) Skin Prep

Leading up to your wedding, let your skin breathe as much as possible by going make-up free and be sure to hydrate. Avoid drying masks like charcoal or clay, instead opt for hydrating masks and top up on the H2O. Having naturally hydrated skin helps to keep your face blemish free, improves texture and gives a good base to apply your primer.

6) Touch-Up

Keep touch-up essentials such as a portable mirror, fan, your setting powder, blotting papers and lip colour close to hand. Even with all the tips and tricks of the trade, you should expect to touch up your makeup throughout the day, especially before your wedding portraits.

7) Helping Hand

Considering that your makeup is done at the start of the day, before your wedding shoot, solemnisation and travelling around in Singapore’s hot and humid weather, you may want to consider hiring your makeup artist for an extra few hours to keep you looking fresh. If budget is a concern, have one of your bridesmaids watch the makeup process, so she can help you with touch-ups if needed.

8) Up Do

We’re no stranger to sweat in Singapore’s humid climate, add a mask into the fray and things start getting uncomfortable. Choose a hairstyle that keeps your hair off your face and neck to keep you cool; opting for a simple, tied back style also helps to keep things neat as you’re guaranteed to be adjusting your mask throughout the day.
